Living in a major city can be pretty expensive. It's always tough to curb your spending when all of your friends are having fun and want you to come along, but sometimes you have to be smart with your money and hold back a bit.

Even though you're on a low budget, you can still have a good time at night and on the weekends. Check out free concerts, restaurant specials, cheap comedy clubs and weekend fairs all over the city. If you are in a major city, there's always something going on.

The local newspapers and especially a lot of websites have tons of information about these types of things. With just a bit of research, you can plan a great day, night or weekend for very little money.

The big item that usually takes up most of a person's spending is rent. Some ways that could save you some money, although it might take some work, are finding rent-stabilized buildings, friends who are moving out early or living in the far reaches of town.

Some nicer buildings are actually desperate to rent out their apartments and you might be able to get a great deal with several free months of rent.

So there are a couple of ways to save money in a big city. Many of these methods could really apply to any city dweller, regardless of what city you live in.

The key is to stay disciplined and not spend wastefully when you really don't have to. You'll be thankful that you saved some money in the long run, especially if you need it for more important things like for food and a place to stay.
